In 2017, during a challenging time in my life, a conversation with my AA Sponsor became a turning point. Complaining about my struggles, she interrupted me with a powerful question: "What are you grateful for?" In the midst of my broken heart and frustrations, she challenged me to buy gloves and distribute them to those in need. That day, I learned the incredible impact of shifting focus from self to others – a lesson that would guide me for years to come.
Service work has emerged as my anchor, particularly in navigating sobriety and crafting a life of fulfillment. Insights gleaned from astute entrepreneurs, successful individuals, and personal experiences reinforce the notion that true happiness lies in extending a helping hand.
Fast-forwarding to a juncture of business uncertainties and financial strains, I recalled Lynda's wisdom. I reached out to my friend Jennifer, the visionary behind Kansas City Heroes – a non-profit dedicated to aiding the houseless and elderly in our community.
Our collaboration morphed into a monthly event at Washington Square Park, where we provided haircuts to those in need. Beckie, an exceptional hair artist, and her husband joined our cause, overseeing the operations. Smiles, conversations, and a sense of belonging blossomed during these sessions.
Inspired to broaden our impact, Beckie and I envisioned offering shampoo services, especially as the weather grew colder. This spurred our exploration, leading us from trailers to campers, vans, and ultimately, a mini-bus outfitted with hair stations and a shampoo bowl. The decision was made – the bus was acquired and is currently undergoing preparations for our houseless friends.
The objective is clear: to be present at Washington Square Park during the festive season, inside our warm bus, extending haircuts and shampoo services. The bus requires some attention, but my faith in something larger than myself propels this endeavor. I am not walking this path alone, and the prospect of unveiling our offering to the houseless community fills me with immense anticipation.
While this chapter marks a beginning, I eagerly anticipate the future opportunities and pathways that will unfold. Commencing with the houseless community, our expedition of compassion, warmth, and transformation continues.
Thank you for being part of my narrative. Stay tuned for more!
With affection, Liz ❤️✂️😊
